The groundwater crisis in Cochise County is the result of rampant, entrenched lawlessness. We live in a society in which—at least currently—terrible things happen with impunity.
Why is Cochise County a lawless fiefdom? Two words: Corporate Ag. In this campaign, we are vagabonds of the obvious. We do our best to keep reminding people WHO is holding the reins of power and the strings of government.
If you’re big enough, you get a pass, even for egregious conduct. We must work hard to elevate the ethos of public concern among our citizen-neighbors. We’ll need to build new civic institutions and strengthen existing ones.
At present, we’re not keeping up with the concentration of power in fewer and fewer hands. The AMA won’t stop this, nor will our elected “representatives” who don’t represent US.
Nor will the judges, who won’t hesitate to hang us upon a cross of well casings. “Judicial review” means they’ll be happy to sign the execution orders for everyday farmers, ranchers, and householders.
