The Superpower(s) of Everyday People

Here’s another sabbath lesson shared by our friend Allegra A.:

“Our capacity to forgive is our superpower.”

—Mirabai Starr (b. 1961), author of creative non-fiction, from her book Wild Mercy

Until today, we spoke of the one superpower that everyday people have. We said it was our ability to align around a big demand and then lock arms in unbreakable solidarity.

That’s how we work to put Cochise County groundwater in trust for future generations.

The quote above gives us something new to think about. We have twosuperpowers.

At the end of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln talked about healing the country. At his second inaugural, the first Republican president had a message of reconciliation: “With malice toward none, with charity for all.”

One day soon, we’ll be at the end of the Cochise County Groundwater War (2003-present). We’ll need to practice the superpower of forgiveness. If not, we’ll have won the war but lost the peace.
